NTT East ordered to pay 66 mil. yen for employee's work-linked death

SAPPORO, Japan - Bereaved family members of Yoshikatsu Okumura, a 58-year-old employee at NTT East Corp. who died after taking part in a two-month training camp, speak at a press conference in Sapporo on March 9 after the Sapporo District Court ordered the company to pay 66 million yen in damages to them. The court recognized the family's claim that Okumura's death was related to the training camp, arranged as part of the company's restructuring program.

Court rejects damages suit by 3 Chinese war survivors

TOKYO, Japan - Yang Baoshan, one of three Chinese plaintiffs who filed a suit seeking Japanese government compensation for a massacre by the Imperial Japanese Army in China's Liaoning Province in 1932, speaks to reporters in Tokyo on June 28 after their suit was rejected by the Tokyo District Court the same day. The three -- two men and a woman who were between 4 and 9 years old at the time -- claim they lost their family members and were subjected to Japanese army brutality in a suburb of the city of Fushun on Sept. 16, 1932.

Dentsu admits responsibility in 'karoshi' case

TOKYO, Japan - Japan's largest ad agency, Dentsu Inc., on June 23 admitted its liability in the 1991 suicide from overwork of a 24-year-old employee, Ichiro Oshima, and will pay some 168 million yen in compensation to the man's parents in an out-of-court settlement. Oshima's father, Hisamitsu, 71, tells a press conference the same day, ''My son's dignity was fully restored. I'm satisfied with the settlement.'' His lawyers said this is the first ''karoshi'' (death from overwork) case in which a company admitted its liability and reached an out-of-court settlement.

Osaka Gov. Yokoyama ordered to pay 11 mil. yen damages

OSAKA, Japan - Osaka Gov. Knock Yokoyama speaks to reporters at his office Dec. 13 shortly after he was ordered by the Osaka District Court to pay 11 million yen in compensation to a 21-year-old university student for sexually harassing her during his reelection campaign in April and later slandering her by filing a counter lawsuit. In the press conference, Yokoyama, 67, said, ''I have no plans to resign. Since I stuck to my decision to place priority on official duties, such a ruling was inevitable.''
