Kuwata tapped to make major league debut

NEW YORK, United States - Former Yomiuri Giants right-hander Masumi Kuwata (file photo), now with the Pittsburg Pirates' Triple-A affiliate in Indianapolis, has been elevated to the big leagues, a club spokesman said June 9. The 39-year-old veteran sprained his right ankle in a spring training game against the Toronto Blue Jays on March 26 after colliding with home plate umpire Wally Bell.

Released by the Hanshin Tigers in the 2004 offseason, the 39-year-old Irabu started training at the start of the year with an eye on making his comeback and is set to return to the mound in May for his first competitive game in five years.

Maekawa inks minor league deal with Cardinals

NEW YORK, United States - Former Orix Buffaloes left-hander Katsuhiko Maekawa (in file photo) has signed a minor league deal with the St. Louis Cardinals, the team's official website said Dec. 19. Maekawa, 30, who will not receive an invitation to major league spring training, was fired by Orix in January 2007 due to a hit-and-run incident while driving without a license.
