Ex-Peruvian President Fujimori sentenced to 6 years in prison

TOKYO, Japan - File photo of former President Alberto Fujimori, who was sentenced by a Peruvian court on Dec. 11 to six years in prison for abuse of authority in connection with the illegal search of the home of a former aide. Fujimori, who is also on trial for other charges including the massacre of citizens, immediately appealed against the ruling.

Niimi, lawyer who fought for Chinese laborers' rights, dies at 59

TOKYO, Japan - Takashi Niimi (in undated file photo), a human rights lawyer who represented the rights of Chinese nationals who were forced to work at a labor camp in Akita Prefecture during World War II, died of cardiac failure on Dec. 20, his family said. He was 59. Niimi, a Nagoya native, led a five-year court battle against major Japanese construction firm Kajima Corp. through November 2000 over a 60.5 million yen damages suit filed by 11 of the survivors.

Ex-DPJ lawmaker sentenced to suspended 2-year prison term

NAGOYA, Japan - The Nagoya District Court on Dec. 16 sentences former Democratic Party of Japan lawmaker Kenji Kobayashi (file photo) to two years in prison, suspended for three years, for stimulant drug possession and use. Kobayashi was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2000 and was reelected in 2003. He lost his Diet seat in the Sept. 11 general election. (Kyodo)

Takao Ode, ex-Supreme Court justice, dies at 73

TOKYO, Japan - Takao Ode (file photo), a former justice of the Supreme Court, died of heart failure at his home in Sano, Tochigi Prefecture, on Sept. 29, the Supreme Court said Oct. 2. He was 73. Ode served as a Supreme Court justice from September 1997 to December 2001, when he resigned due to poor health.
