Court grants S. Korean woman A-bomb health passbook

      NAGASAKI, Japan - Supporters of Choi Gye Chol, a South Korean atomic-bomb victim who died at a hospital in Pusan in July aged 78, celebrate at the entrance to the Nagasaki District Court on Sept. 28 after the court ruled atomic-bomb sufferers do not have to visit Japan to apply for allowance for victims of the 1945 U.S. atomic bombings. Choi filed a lawsuit seeking nullification of the Nagasaki city government's decision to reject his application for the allowance. In 1980 the Japanese government granted him the right to receive support when he visited Japan, but the permission was invalidated later the same year after he left Japan for South Korea.

                TOKYO, Japan - A bronze sculpture commemorating the courage of Lee Su Hyon, a 26-year-old South Korean student who died Jan. 26 in a bid to rescue a man who had fallen onto to railway tracks, is unveiled July 1 at a Japanese-language school in Tokyo's Arakawa Ward where he was studying. Lee and Shiro Sekine, 47, a Japanese photographer from Yokohama, died while trying to save a man who had fallen onto the tracks of a JR station in Tokyo. Lee's parents, Lee Song Dae (L, background) and Shin Yoon Chan (next to Lee), joined the unveiling ceremony.

                  TOKYO, Japan - Kwak Kwi Hun (2nd from R), 76, a Korean survivor of the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima who won what could be a landmark suit for overseas survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings in 1945, asks Justice Minister Mayumi Moriyama (L) not to appeal the ruling. The Osaka District Court on June 1 ordered the Osaka prefectural government to pay compensation to Kwak for cutting off his medical allowance after he left Japan for home.
