New icebreaker Shirase leaves Japan on Antarctic mission

TOKYO, Japan - The new icebreaker Shirase is seen off by family members of its crew as it leaves Harumi pier at Tokyo Port on Nov. 10, 2009, for its Antarctic expedition. Japan's fourth icebreaker for Antarctic expeditions, the new, 12,500-ton Shirase has top-level icebreaking capabilities.
