Japan cuts Olympic gold medal target as hopefuls fail
LONDON, Britain - Japanese Chef de Mission Haruki Uemura speaks at a press conference in London on Aug. 4, 2012. The head of the Japanese delegation effectively lowered the country's gold medal target for the London Olympics to more than nine -- the number won at the previous Summer Games in Beijing -- as the country's athletes had managed to win only two golds as of Aug. 3, around halfway through the competition. Before these Games, he had set a target of fifth place in the medal standings, which translates to around 15 to 18 gold medals.
