Grandma who knows history of Kompira Kabuki

TAKAMATSU, Japan - Takuko Yamamoto shows confetti she made for parades ahead of spring Kabuki performances in Kotohira, Kagawa Prefecture, at her home in the town on April 3, 2013. She has helped liven up performances known as "Shikoku Kompira Kabuki Oshibai" at Kanamaruza, or Kyu Kompira Oshibai (Old Kompira Grand Theater), for nearly 30 years by making boxes of confetti to be thrown over the heads of performers during pre-opening parades every year.

NAGOYA, Japan - Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro (R), father of scandal-tainted Kabuki star Ebizo, throws beans, a tradition marking the lunar calendar start of spring, at Misonoza theater in Nagoya on Feb. 3, 2011, ahead of the Feb. 5 start of a Kabuki show there. Ebizo, who is indefinitely suspending performances following his involvement in a bar brawl previous November, had to cancel his participation in the show, with his father telling fans who gathered for the bean scattering, ''A lot of things happened last year, and I want to invite new luck.'' The beans are intended to drive demons away and invite luck.

People flock to Kabuki-za before April 30 closing

TOKYO, Japan - People seen taking commemorative photos in front of Kabuki-za, home of Japan's traditional Kabuki drama, on April 22, 2010. A series of farewell performances has been held since January at the theater before it closes on April 30. It will be demolished to build a 49-story multi-functional complex by 2013.
