JR Hokkaido finds in-house maintenance rule violations

SAPPORO, Japan - Makoto Nojima, president of Hokkaido Railway Co., tells a press conference at the company's head office in Sapporo on Sept. 22, 2013, that it has found violations of its in-house track maintenance rules at a total of 97 locations on its railway lines.

                    West Japan Railway Co. (JR West) has begun anti-viral and anti-bacterial treatment of the entire interior of its trains, with plans to implement the treatment on about 3,600 cars running in the Keihanshin area by the end of September and eventually on all 5,200 cars on conventional lines. The plan is to ensure the safety and security of passengers under with corona. The system uses chemicals that have been confirmed by a third-party organization to be effective against influenza and noroviruses. The effect will last for several years, the company said. The chemicals will be sprayed on windows, seats and other places where passengers may touch them. The number of commuters and other passengers in the Kansai region is gradually returning following the lifting of the state of emergency declared for the new coronavirus infection on March 21.
