NTT develops mobile base for communication in disaster

TOKYO, Japan - Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. and its partners including Tohoku University have developed a mobile base station to enable communication using smartphones and other devices in the event that telecommunications infrastructure is destroyed by an earthquake, tsunami or other disaster. A van known as an "ICT Car" that is able to provide a wireless network within a 500-meter radius is pictured in Tokyo on Jan. 28, 2014.

5 carriers file suit over NTT connection fee hike

TOKYO, Japan - The presidents of five telecommunications carriers -- KDDI Corp., Japan Telecom Co., Poweredcom Inc., Cable & Wireless IDC Inc. and Fusion Communications Corp. -- hold a joint press conference in Tokyo on July 17 after filing a suit with the Tokyo District Court against the Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications over the ministry's approval of a hike in connection fees they pay to Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT).

New carriers, U.S. join hands in opposing NTT's fee hike plan

TOKYO, Japan - Officials from new Japanese common carriers sit together with consumers as well as U.S. government officials at a symposium held in Tokyo on March 4 to oppose the telecommunications ministry's plan to let Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT) raise the interconnection fees it charges to other carriers to access its phone lines. Jessica Webster, first secretary at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, told the meeting that the planned fee hike would wipe out benefits from increased competition in Japan's telecom market.

NTT-ME to start cut-rate IP phone service for ADSL subscribers

TOKYO, Japan - NTT-ME Corp., a Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. arm, said June 28 it will offer a new type of Internet-based phone service for subscribers of the NTT group's asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) service without charging them for the length of phone calls, starting in September. Those ADSL subscribers will be asked to pay only a monthly basic fee of some 1,100 yen if the subscribers talk to each other through compact phone handsets connected to personal computers.

NTT plunges into red

TOKYO, Japan - Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp.
