Japanese cities vie for title of hottest place in Japan

KOCHI, Japan - People watch a temperature display set up in Shimanto, Kochi Prefecture, in July 2014 to vie for the title of Japan's hottest city against Saitama Prefecture's Kumagaya and Gifu Prefecture's Tajimi, which each registered 40.9 C on Aug. 16, 2007. Shimanto set Japan's highest temperature of 41.0 C on Aug. 12 last year. The cities use high temperatures to promote tourism.
