On Tuesday, the death toll from the earthquakes climbed to more than 5,800 in Türkiye and at least 2,470 in Syria. More than 36,000 people were injured in the two countries. Authorities say the death toll is expected to rise further as the rescue operations are hampered by bad weather. Türkiye's southern province of Hatay and Syria's northern Aleppo city suffered the biggest loss of lives, while Lebanon, Israel and Cyprus also felt the tremor. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared a three-month state of emergency on Tuesday in 10 of the country's provinces hit by the quakes.
