Brown Shrike - Lanius Cristatus - Animal India

The Brown Shrike (Lanius cristatus) is a small bird that belongs to the shrike family. It is mainly found in woodland edges, bushy areas, thickets, groves, and secondary growths in the open country of Asia. It is closely related to the Isabelline Shrike and Red-backed Shrike. The Brown Shrike is a migratory bird that breeds in eastern and central Asia and spends the winter in Indonesia, Southeast Asia, and India. It is similar in habits to the North American shrike but is more elusive and spends less time perching in the open. The Brown Shrike feeds primarily on insects, other arthropods, and spiders, and is a valuable asset in either the field or the garden as it helps in controlling populations of grasshoppers, mice, and more. A Brown Shrike bird was spotted perched on the branch of a Moringa tree, nodding and chirping curiously at Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on February 13, 2024. (Photo by Soumyabrata Roy/NurPhoto)
