Columbia University Students Continue Campus Demonstrations After Arrests

Students and community members from Columbia University are gathering in protest on the main university quad in New York City, United States, on April 19, 2024. The day after Columbia University President Nemat (Minouche) Shafik called for the arrests of students protesting the Israel-Gaza War, the students are returning to the main campus quad, this time bringing tarps and blankets instead of tents. This follows a standoff and arrests that took place after President Shafik was questioned before Congress regarding campus antisemitism and the enforcement of rules about protests. The demonstrators are demanding that the university divest from Israel due to the ongoing Israel-Gaza War. (Photo by Melissa Bender/NurPhoto)
