Three restaurant employees rescued an elderly person caught in a flood in Huangshan, Anhui on June 23. Quick-thinking Fang Jian, Bi Yuefei, and Lu Cheng immediately jumped into the raging flood after an elderly person and his electric bike got caught in the water and pulled him to safety. Luckily, the elderly person was unharmed. Upon learning of the employees' heroic actions, the restaurant owner Mr. Huang awarded them certificates and a bonus of five hundred Chinese yuan each. During a banquet held for commendation, Huang encouraged everyone to emulate their spirit.

On April 19, Toshiba awarded a special prize to Koichi Mizushima, 78, executive fellow of Toshiba Corporation, for his contribution to the development of lithium-ion batteries. In the announcement of this year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Akira Yoshino, an honorary fellow of Asahi Kasei Corporation, and John Goodnough, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin, U.S., who collaborated with Mr. Mizushima, were chosen to receive the prize, but Mr. Mizushima, who was expected to win the prize simultaneously, did not.
