Sony to release digital Walkman with built-in hard disk

TOKYO, Japan - Sony Corp. said July 1 it will put its new Walkman NW-HD1, capable of storing up to 1,300 songs, on the Japanese market on July 10 to pave the way for global sales. Containing a 20-gigabyte hard disk, the NW-HD1 can store the equivalent of 900 compact discs and run up to 30 hours on a single charge of its battery. It can be hooked up to a personal computer to download music.

IBM Japan develops prototype, portable computing device

TOKYO, Japan - IBM Japan Ltd. said Feb. 25 it has developed a prototype of a compact portable computing device that allows users to carry their software to locations equipped with dedicated cradles. The small device, tentatively named the PC Core System, measures only 8.2 by 16 by 2.2 centimeters, weighs just 300 grams and contains a processor, memory and hard disk drive.

TOKYO, Japan - Sony Corp. said Jan. 14 it will launch the world's thinnest music-playing device in April. The card-size Giga pavit HZ-WS2000 is 10.6 millimeters thick and weighs 68 grams, making it the world's thinnest and lightest music player with a hard disk drive, Sony said.

TOKYO, Japan - Toshiba Corp. said on June 16 that it will launch a new multi-drive DVD recorder that complies with the DVD-RAM, DVD-RW and DVD-R formats in the domestic market in mid-July, making it the world's first company to launch such a model. NEC to launch PCs for digital satellite TV broadcasts

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows what NEC Corp. says is Japan's first desktop personal computer capable of receiving digital satellite television broadcasts. NEC said Feb. 27 it will start shipping the VALUESTAR T on March 8. The model has a 15.3-inch wide digital liquid crystal display (LCD) that can automatically show selected TV programs. The model is equipped with Intel's Pentium III CPU and a 60-gigabyte hard disk drive.
