Victims of Hanaoka Incident mourned

ODATA, Japan - A man lays flowers at the cenotaph dedicated to the victims of the Hanaoka Incident during a ceremony held in Odate, Akita Prefecture, on June 30. On June 30, 1945, Chinese laborers at the labor camp near a copper mine in Odate staged an uprising against their Japanese supervisors. Five supervisors were killed and more than 400 conscripted Chinese workers were believed to have died in the uprising and as a result of severe working conditions.

The cremated remains of Rieko Hanaoka, the 35-year-old Japanese volunteer shot dead Sept. 17 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, are brought back to Japan on Sept. 26. She had been working in the city under the Japanese International Cooperation Agency. Her parents accompanied the remains on the flight from Tanzania to Narita airport.
