SAGA, Japan - As one young participant watches with all the intensity of a bull fighter, two beetles lock horns in the All-Japan Beetles Sumo Contest held in Taira, Saga Prefecture on July 22. About 200 children from Saga and elsewhere took part in the tournament, bringing with them the prized beetles they breed. Under the rules of the contest, the beetle loses when it is roughed up by the opponent or when it gets scared and beats the retreat after the initial stare-off, a ritual common in sumo wrestling. The title this year went to a beetle bred by a 10-year-old boy, Atsushi Matsusaki from Kumamoto Prefecture, who said he won the contest in his third entry. ''I think I won because I always let my beetles fight against each other,'' he says proudly.

The Great Buddha of Nofukuji Temple (present-day Hyogo Ward) taken in the latter half of the Meiji Period. This is an important Tendai Sect temple and is a place remembered in connection with Taira Kiyomori, who traded with Sung Dynasty China in the latter part of the Heian Period. After the opening of the port of Kobe, Christianity gained popularity. This statue of Vairocana Buddha was unveiled on March 15, 1891 as part of an effort to revive Buddhism. Kanda Myojin Shrine prospered under the protection of the Tokugawa Shogunate as a guardian deity of Edo. Taira Masakado is enshrined here as the Oanamuchi-no-mikoto deity. The shrine moved to its current location (present-day Sotokanda 2-chome) from Surugadai in 1616. It was renamed Kanda Shinto Shrine in 1872. The Kanda Festival, one of the three major festivals in Tokyo, is held here every other year, formerly on September 15, now in May. Itsukushima Shinto Shrine at Miyajima was built in 592, when Emperor Suiko succeeded to the throne. Taira Kiyomori died in 1181. His body was cremated in Atago and buried in Tsunegashima, an artificial island made by Kiyomori in Owadahaku (presently Hyogotsu). Taira Castle is located in Nakaku, Nagoya city. It was the residence of the Owari Tokugawa family. The castle tower can be seen from the outside of the moat. The castle tower was built by the Sakuji Bugyo (construction prefect) Kobori Enshu in 1612, and was destroyed by fire during the war in 1945. The present castle was restored in 1959. The Sanjusangendo in Higashiyama-ku of Kyoto City. The temple enshrines the thousand Kannons offered by Taira Kiyomori at the request of the ex-Emperor Goshirakawa. The thousand Buddhas (wooden statues of thousand-handed Kannon, actually 1001 statues in all) are based on the anclent theory that if a ruler creates many Buddhas, the whole nation will be promised happiness. There are 500 statues in ten rows on both sides of the principal image of the seated thousand-handed Kannon, and one in the back.
