Temple offers reward for clues to stolen Buddha image

FUKUOKA, Japan - A statue of Yakushi Nyorai or medicine Buddha is shown in this file photo taken in December 2009. Supporters of Myoryuzan Yakushido, a Buddhist temple in Nakama, Fukuoka Prefecture, southwestern Japan, announced a decision on Dec. 24, 2014, to pay a cash reward of 2 million yen for key information leading to the discovery of the statue stolen in 2010.

Daigoji temple national treasures to be made open to public

KYOTO, Japan - The image of the Buddha Yakushi (Healing), flanked by those of two attendants, Nikko and Gakko, are shown to the press in the Yakushido Hall of the Daigoji temple in Kyoto on Aug. 9, one day before they are opened to the general public. All the images, designated as national treasures, are known to have been executed by the priest Eri (852-935) in 907. Their exhibition, only for an hour daily, is to last till Sept. 17.

This photo was taken before the spa town of Kiga was lost in a big fire in 1892 and before the new road between Miyanoshita and Miyagino opened in 1889. Jindairo of Kameya Inn and the entrance facing the new road can be seen. Yakushido is visible behind Kameya Inn. The buildings before them are Matsuzakaya Inn and Sengokuya Inn. The building half covered by the trees on the left is Chokairo of Matsuzakaya. This is the spa town of Kiga before the new road to Miyagino opened in 1889. The torii gate a little far back is Yakushido ( a Buddhist temple hall housing a statue of the Buddha of healing,) and the building on the left is Yuyoin. The buildings before them belong to Kameya Inn. The house on the right is Jindairo. Matsuzakaya Inn is across from it on the other side of Susawa River. The building with a white wall on the left is Chokairo of Matsuzakaya Inn. Finally the one in the foreground is Sengokuya. It was called Honjido because the Yakushinyorai, the honjibutsu (main Buddha of worship) of Tokugawa Ieyasu, was enshrined there, but at present it is called Yakushido. A dragon is painted on the ceiling, and when one claps, the ceiling echoes, so it is called nakiryu (crying dragon). The turning lantern donated by the king of the Netherlands is placed in front of the Yomei Gate. In the rear is a drum tower, and further to the rear is the Honjido.
