TOKYO, Japan - The Okinawa rail, a nearly flightless bird endemic to Okinawa island, is among 1,221 bird species considered threatened with extinction in a report released by BirdLife International, a bird conservation group based in Cambridge, England. The population of Okinawa rail is estimated at between 1,200 and 1,680, confined to the Yambaru area in northern Okinawa. According to BirdLife, 83 bird species in Japan are threatened or near threatened with extinction out of approximately 10,000 bird species in the world.

TOKYO, Japan - The Environment Ministry plans to begin implanting microchips into pet cats, which will carry information about the cat and its owner, in a bid to protect endangered birds that are increasingly being preyed upon by stray cats. The ministry said Jan. 21 it hopes the move will protect endangered species such as the rare flightless bird, the Okinawa Rail (yambarukuina - in file photo), and the Okinawa Woodpecker (noguchigera), which live in the Yambaru region in Okinawa.

World's 1st seawater power generator begins trial

A trial run of the world's first electric power generator using pumped-up seawater begins March 16 at the Okinawa Yambaru plant on the Pacific Ocean shore of Japan's southwestern island prefecture. The plant will not be in practical use until at least the spring of 2004 when a five-year survey to study the effects of seawater on the facility is due to be completed.
