Nader Saad, a spokesperson of the Egyptian cabinet, said Wednesday's decision aims to support Egyptian farmers, encourage the expansion of strategic crop cultivation, and reduce the import bill. This decision comes in implementation of the directives from Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi to revise the supply price of wheat for farmers in the current harvest season. OSAKA, Japan - A woman looks at a Christmas cake, which is decorated with some 100 diamonds and priced at 100 million yen, at Takashimaya Co.'s department store in Osaka on Dec. 15. The cake decorated with the diamonds worth a total of around 50 carats from southern Africa will be put on display through Dec. 25 even if it is sold before then, the store said.

Seiko Watch to sell 15 mil. yen special wrist watch

TOKYO, Japan - Seiko Watch Corp. will put on the market in mid-September one special luxury Credor-brand model wrist watch (photo) priced at 15 million yen to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the founding of Dutch diamond cutter Royal Ascher, the company said Sept. 11. The watch contains 230 custom-made Ascher-cut diamonds totaling 6.7 carats on parts of its case and dial as well as the watch band.

Takashimaya to hold 'birthday' exhibition on Astro Boy

TOKYO, Japan - A jewel-studded robot is put for press preview by department store operator Takashimaya Co. on April 1, on the eve of an exhibition the company holds at its Nihombashi store to celebrate the birthday of cartoon character Astro Boy. In the late cartoonist Osamu Tezuka's popular science fiction story, Tetsuwan Atom, known as Astro Boy in English, was brought to life on April 7, 2003. The head and shorts of the 10-centimeter-high robot model is made of black diamonds, while rubies, emeralds and diamonds are used for other parts. The model, which is not for sale, is covered by jewels totaling 32 carats and is worth almost 100 million yen.

Swiss watchmaker unveils bejeweled Christmas tree

TOKYO, Japan - Swiss luxury watchmaker Piaget unveiled a Christmas tree decorated with about 1.35 billion yen worth of diamonds, jewelry and timepieces to invited members of the press in Tokyo's Minato Ward on Dec. 7. The 6-meter tree features over 100 carats worth of diamonds, including a 154 million yen watch sporting a 44-carat diamond and an 82 million yen ring with a 5.5-carat diamond.
