Current Toshiba "SCiB" products

Current Toshiba "SCiB" products

Toshiba is planning to commercialize the next generation of its proprietary SCiB lithium-ion rechargeable batteries in fiscal 2020 or later, with an energy density that is more than 50% higher than that of conventional products. The company has already developed a prototype cell at its research laboratory and will establish mass production technology. While SCiBs are strong in terms of longevity and fast charging performance, energy density, which leads to higher battery capacity, has been an issue. The company aims to expand its business by focusing on hybrid vehicles (HV), railroads and stationary applications. However, in the lithium-ion battery market as a whole, major manufacturers in Japan, China and South Korea are competing with each other. Toshiba's strategy is to target a "niche top" market by narrowing down the target market because price competition is not in Toshiba's favor. NTT's Transparent Rechargeable Battery

NTT's Transparent Rechargeable Battery

NTT has developed a "see-through rechargeable battery" (photo) that delivers about 50 times more power than conventional batteries. The average transmittance, which was previously about the same as that of sunglasses, has been tripled to 69%, equivalent to that of window glass. By gelatinizing the electrolyte, the average voltage was increased from 1.7 volts to 2.5 volts, which led to the improvement in transmittance. It also made it possible to deposit the film over a larger area, resulting in a larger battery. Six of the new batteries have the performance of one button battery. The company expects to use the new batteries for transparent signboards in tourist spots that post information without spoiling the scenery, windowpanes that can store electricity obtained from solar power generation, and lenses for smart glasses. In the future, the company aims to add flexible performance that can be bent. Photo taken on November 11, 2019, credit: Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun / Kyodo News Images
