This is the first time in the world that a robot has been able to detect a smell in its surroundings using a biosensor, TAU said, adding that it even sent electrical signals that could be classified according to the smell type. In experiments, the researchers connected the biological sensor, based on a locust antenna, to an electronic system. Using a machine learning algorithm, they sorted odors with a sensitivity 10,000 times higher than existing electronic devices. The new biohybrid system could thus identify a wide range of smells, such as geranium, lemon, marzipan, and even some types of Scotch whisky, then the researchers were able to cre

This so-called Scotch on ''Alaskan rock'' is part of a sales campaign launched by Kirin Brewery Co. to perk up the consumption of whisky in Japan. Kirin officials say the company, the distributor of Scotch whisky Shevas Regal in Japan, has contracted for 7 tons of Alaskan permafrost ice from a licensed U.S. dealer. The ice is being distributed for free to more than 600 bars in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya that are participating in the Kirin campaign, and customers ordering a Chevas in these bars can ask for Alaskan ice to go with their whisky. As sake and other Japanese liquors have been nibbling away at the non-native alcohol market, the consumption of whisky in Japan has reportedly fallen below 100,000 kiloliters a year from a peak of 380,000 kl in 1983.

Kirin to sell 1 mil. yen whisky to mark 1953 coronation

TOKYO, Japan - Kirin Brewery Co. said May 29 it will sell six bottles of scotch whisky (photo) for 1 million yen each to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the coronation of British Queen Elizabeth II. Chivas Brothers Ltd. of Britain produced the whisky by blending mellowed malt of over 50 years, according to Kirin officials. The six bottles are among 255 bottles to be sold around the world.
