Obuchi, cabinet ministers visit Ise Shrine
Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi (C) and members of his cabinet
visit Ise Shrine in Mie Prefecture, western Japan, on Jan. 4 to make
New Year offerings. New Year visits by the cabinet to Ise Shrine, one
of the most important Shinto shrines in Japan, have become almost
customary despite the Constitution's provision that the state and its
organs should refrain from any kind of religious activity.
