Atomic bomb memorial hall opens in Hiroshima

HIROSHIMA, Japan - Visitors look at the wall painting of the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima at the Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims that opened in the western Japan city on Aug. 1. The state-run facility houses more than 4,700 photographs of victims and a database of around 100,000 testimonies about survivors' experiences. (Kyodo)

(1)Court orders damages for A-bomb-affected Korean workers

HIROSHIMA, Japan - South Korean plaintiffs who sued the Japanese government and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. for a total of 440 million yen in damages enter the Hiroshima High Court in Hiroshima on Jan. 18. The court ordered the state to pay 1.2 million yen in damages to each of the 40 plaintiffs, who were affected by the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima while forced to work at Mitsubishi's factory in Hiroshima as conscript laborers during World War II. (2)Pieces of possibly oldest colored wall painting found at Hory

KASHIHARA, Japan -Photo taken on Dec. 1 shows the remains (bottom right) of what is believed to be the original monastery of Horyuji Temple in Nara Prefecture, where about 30 charred pieces of what may be the oldest colored wall painting in Japan have been excavated. Seen on the top are (1) the temple's five-storied pagoda and (2) main hall, believed to date from the 7th century. Horyuji Temple, the world's oldest wooden building, is designated as a World Heritage site. (Kyodo)

Wall clock donated to Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum

NAGASAKI, Japan - A woman in the city of Nagasaki has donated a wall clock (in photo) that stopped at the moment of the U.S. atomic bombing of Nagasaki at around 11:02 a.m. on Aug. 9, 1945, to the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, museum officials said on Oct. 12. The clock, which has almost no scratches or cracks, was in her home at the time of the explosion. The home was located some 5 kilometers from the center of the blast. (Kyodo)

Nagasaki appeals ruling on overseas A-bomb victims

NAGASAKI, Japan - Mi Suk (C), daughter of Choi Gye Chol, a South Korean atomic-bomb victim who filed a lawsuit seeking nullification of the Nagasaki city government's decision to reject his application for allowances for atomic-bomb victims, holds up Choi's photo during a press conference in Nagasaki on Oct. 7. Mi protested the Nagasaki government's appeal against the Nagasaki District Court's ruling in favor of Choi. Choi died at a hospital in Busan in July aged 78. (Kyodo)

Overseas A-bomb sufferers exempted from visiting Japan

NAGASAKI, Japan - Supporters of Choi Gye Chol, a South Korean atomic-bomb victim who died at a hospital in Pusan in July aged 78, celebrate at the entrance to the Nagasaki District Court on Sept. 28 after the court ruled atomic-bomb sufferers do not have to visit Japan to apply for allowance for victims of the 1945 U.S. atomic bombings. Choi filed a lawsuit seeking nullification of the Nagasaki city government's decision to reject his application for the allowance. In 1980 the Japanese government granted him the right to receive support when he visited Japan, but the permission was invalidated later the same year after he left Japan for South Korea. (Kyodo)

NAGASAKI, Japan - Australian Aborigines, Americans and others opposing nuclear arms arrive Aug. 9 at a Nagasaki park where the 1945 U.S. atomic bomb exploded, after an eight-month, 4,500-kilometer walk in Australia and Japan. The same day, a ceremony marking the 59th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki was held at Peace Park in the city. (Kyodo)
