Murderer ordered to pay compensation in installments

TOKYO, Japan - The Tokyo District Court on Dec. 4 ordered Mitsuko Yamada (file photo) who murdered a 2-year-old girl to pay the victim's parents 61 million yen in compensation, of which 19.8 million yen is to be paid in installments over 20 years. In November, the Tokyo High Court sentenced Yamada to 15 years in prison for strangling Haruna Wakayama on Nov. 22, 1999, in Tokyo's Bunkyo Ward and burying her body in the backyard of Yamada's parents' home in the town of Oigawa, Shizuoka Prefecture. NAGOYA, Japan - Tsuneo Otake, a 52-year-old certified public accountant, enters the Nagoya District Court building in Nagoya's Naka Ward on Sept. 4 to hear a court ruling in his tax evasion trial. Ex-tax bureau chief gets prison term for tax evasion

TOKYO, Japan - The Tokyo District Court on July 11 sentenced Tsunekichi Hamada (in file photo), a former head of the Sapporo Regional Taxation Bureau, to 14 months in prison for evading some 250 million yen in income tax. Hamada, 64, who has pleaded guilty to the charge, was also ordered to pay a 55 million yen fine. He appealed the ruling to the Tokyo High Court.
