Ex-treasure of LDP faction gets suspended term over donation

TOKYO, Japan - The Tokyo District Court on Dec. 3 sentences Toshiyuki Takigawa (file photo), a former treasurer of a powerful faction of the Liberal Democratic Party, to 10 months in prison, suspended for four years, for not reporting the authorities a 100 million yen donation from the Japan Dental Association. Takigawa was the treasurer of the the Heisei Study Group then led by former Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto. (Kyodo)

TOKYO, Japan - Yukihiro Yoshida (file photo), a former member of the House of Representatives from the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), is arrested on July 15 on suspicion of embezzling 30 million yen from Japan Dental Association. Jail term for Niigata confinement cut to 11 years

TOKYO, Japan - The Tokyo High Court on Dec. 10 dismissed a lower court ruling Nobuyuki Sato (file photo) to 14 years in prison for abducting and confining a 9-year-old girl in his home in Niigata Prefecture for more than nine years, reducing the term to 11 years. (Kyodo)

Murderer ordered to pay compensation in installments

TOKYO, Japan - The Tokyo District Court on Dec. 4 ordered Mitsuko Yamada (file photo) who murdered a 2-year-old girl to pay the victim's parents 61 million yen in compensation, of which 19.8 million yen is to be paid in installments over 20 years. In November, the Tokyo High Court sentenced Yamada to 15 years in prison for strangling Haruna Wakayama on Nov. 22, 1999, in Tokyo's Bunkyo Ward and burying her body in the backyard of Yamada's parents' home in the town of Oigawa, Shizuoka Prefecture. TOKYO, Japan - Emiko Akagi (file photo), the wife of Shiro Akagi, a former member of the Red Army Faction group that hijacked a Japan Airlines passenger plane in 1970, was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for four years, by the Tokyo District Court on Oct. 15. Ex-tax bureau chief gets prison term for tax evasion

TOKYO, Japan - The Tokyo District Court on July 11 sentenced Tsunekichi Hamada (in file photo), a former head of the Sapporo Regional Taxation Bureau, to 14 months in prison for evading some 250 million yen in income tax. Hamada, 64, who has pleaded guilty to the charge, was also ordered to pay a 55 million yen fine. He appealed the ruling to the Tokyo High Court.

Ex-Fuji Heavy execs get suspended terms for bribing lawmaker

TOKYO, Japan - Isamu Kawai (L in file photo), former chairman of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., is given an 18-month jail term suspended for three years by the Tokyo District Court on July 3 for bribing a lawmaker in 1996 over a project to develop an amphibian plane for the Maritime Self-Defense Force. Yasuyuki Kogure (R in file photo), Fuji Heavy's former managing director, was also given a 14-month prison term suspended for three years on the same charges.
