Couple weds at World Cup stadium

YOKOHAMA, Japan - Atsushi Takeda, a soccer enthusiast, and his wife Kumiko gets congratulations from friends at their wedding ceremony held Dec. 22 at International Stadium Yokohama, the venue of the 2002 FIFA World Cup final between Brazil and German. They are the first couple to wed at the stadium, which has begun hosting wedding ceremonies twice a month for a basic fee of 250,000 yen. (Kyodo)

NTT DOCOMO's 5G, New Services and New Products Presentation

NTT DoCoMo announced on the 18th that it will start commercial service of the 5th generation communication (5G) on the 25th. The "5G Gigaho" pricing plan will have unlimited data usage capacity for the time being, with a monthly fee starting at 4,480 yen (excluding consumption tax), 500 yen more than the current "Gigaho" 4G plan. Hulu cuts flat monthly rate

Rickshaws, banned in West Bengal, still ply in Kolkata streets

KOLKATA, India - Rickshaw drivers wait for their fares in the East India city of Kolkata. The state government of West Bengal banned rickshaws as ''inhuman'' a year ago, but rickshaws still provide an inexpensive means of transport for the citizens in Kolkata. Rickshaw drivers say they can rent a rickshaw for 20 rupees (about 60 yen) a day. One 60-year-old driver says he can earn 50 rupees a day after paying the rental fee. ''I can hardly give up this way of life. In the past, there were times when I took in only 10 rupees in cash a month as a farmer in my hometown,'' he says.

TOKYO, Japan - Environment Minister Yuriko Koike speaks at a press conference April 7 on her ministry's decision to abolish a cap on medical expense assistance for unrecognized Minamata mercury-poisoning sufferers under a new support program. Under the program, the 7,500 yen-per-month cap for the Minamata disease sufferers will be abolished but procedures will be eased for them to apply for the reimbursement of medical fees. (Kyodo)

(1) KDDI unveils new cell phone

TOKYO, Japan - KDDI Corp. President Tadashi Onodera shows off a new cellular photo at a news conference in Tokyo on Oct. 22. KDDI said that starting Nov. 28 it will offer a new service enabling users of its ''au'' mobile phone service to transmit and receive data at a speed equivalent to that provided by an asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) connection. KDDI said it will introduce a flat rate for packet transmission, giving users of the new service unlimited access to the Internet for a fee of 4,200 yen a month. (Kyodo)
