Architecture experts land on Gunkanjima for survey
About 240 experts on architecture from Japan and abroad land on Hashima, an island commonly called Gunkanjima (meaning Battleship Island) off the coast of Nagasaki, on June 1, 2015, to survey superannuated buildings there. A UNESCO advisory body has recommended that the "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution," including the coal mine on the island, should be listed as a World Cultural Heritage site. The event was organized by the Japan Concrete Institute. (Kyodo)
