Compensation issue for leprosy patients' kin
Chikara Hayashi, the 94-year-old leader of a group of family members of former leprosy patients who filed a lawsuit to seek compensation from the state for their suffering under the government's now defunct segregation policy, meets the press in Tokyo on July 12, 2019, after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe offered an apology to them. Abe said earlier in the week the government will not appeal against a recent court ruling in Kumamoto awarding damages to former leprosy patients' kin. (Kyodo)
