The main hall of Daikoji, a temple of the Jodoshin Sect located in Kajiya-machi, Nagasaki City. It was donated by Totsuji Yosouemon. In the cemetery is the tomb of Motoki Shozo, pioneer of modern printing in Japan. There is a photograph in which Ueno Hikoma poses just like the man in this photograph, taken by F. Beato at the end of the Edo Period (Cabinet No:66-27). It is assumed that Kuichi used the same composition in this photograph taken when he visited Nagasaki in 1872. Since there is no tablet visible on the Romon gate and the square foundation stones are placed next to the Kaguraden, this photograph is thought to have been taken around 1870 when the temple buildings were demolished.               The big temple bell of Chion-in is seen from west of the bell tower, facing east. The kimono-clad man under the bell lifts his arm to touch the bell. A framed tinted photograph is attached to the pillar to the right. Also called Yoshimizu's Bell, this is the largest bronze bell cast at Sanjo-Kamanza foundry.                 Visitors reach these steps after passing under the famous Nemurineko (sleeping cat) carving in the east corridor of the main hall at Nikko Toshogu and going through Sakashita Gate. At the top the stairs is the Okusha (inner shrine) containing the tomb of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Each step is made from a solid slab of stone.                   This is a Shingon Sect temple established by Kukai (Kobo Taishi) in 824. The sanmon and main hall are in the foreground and background, respectively. The large tree on the left is the upside-down gingko, which is still the largest gingko tree in Tokyo. This spot became the site of the American Legation after the effectuation of the Japan-U.S. Commercial Treaty in June 1859. Townsend Harris was the first envoy. The Legation moved to Tsukiji Akashi-machi in 1875. This photograph was taken in 1863 by Felix Beato, soon after Harris' arrival in Japan.                     Soshido Seishinkaku at Minobusan Kuonji Temple, headquarters of the Nichiren Sect of Japanese Buddhism. This temple is located in Minobu-machi, Minamikoma-gun, Yamanashi Prefecture. Seishinkaku is the place where a famous statue of Nichiren, the founder of the sect, is located. However, the building erected in the Edo Period was destroyed by fire in 1875. This photograph depicts the new building erected in 1881.
