The Chokugaku-mon Gate of Yusho-in Reibyo, Zojoji Temple, Shiba

Zojoji is one of the six temple headquarters of the Jodo Sect and enshrines the tombs of the Tokugawa family. Yushoin is the Buddhist name of the seventh Shogun Tokugawa Ietsugu. The Chokugaku Gate has bronze tiles in eaves of Chinese barge board, and the side is a four-pillared Chinese-style gate with Chidori barge board.       The Great Buddha built at Shinkoji Temple in September 1760. The bronze statue of Vairocana Buddha is located in front of the temple, facing east, and measures about 4.8 meters in height. It was made by Hasegawa Kuzaemon of Osaka. The bell tower, rebuilt in 1772, is behind the statue, and the main hall constructed in 1730 is visible to the far left.             This is Sangedatsu Gate (Sanmon), the middle gate in the temple precincts. The name (lit. three liberations) is said to refer to the Buddhist concept of release from the three poisons (greed, anger, and complaint), or to the three gates (Kuumon, Musoumon, Muganmon) in Paradise. It is said that the gate was reconstructed in 1623.
