      Like photograph #2276, this is a northern view from the entrance of Nakamise, the present location of Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate). The shopping area between Kaminarimon and Niomon is called Nakamise. Legend has it that the priests of Sensoji Temple asked the local people to keep the temple grounds clean and in return gave them permission to set up shops there. Buildings of brick construction were erected in 1885 in imitation of the Ginza Street. Yaomasa Restaurant is located on the north side of the west end of the bridge. In the middle of the bridge is a Western-style temporary arch and a sign that says Sanshisuimei (an expression to describe the beauty of the mountains and water) . The left side of the river is Nishi-gashi (west riverside), and the bridge visible in the far right is Nishi (West) Bridge. This was a transitional period when land transportation was replacing water transportation, but at this time the canal still played a major role in transporting goods.               Mt. Asama (2568m) as seen from the post town of Kutsukake, one of the three post towns of Asama-Negoshi. The Nakasendo Highway passes the southern foot of the mountain. It was after the opening of the first road built as part of the Seven Route Construction Project of Nagano Prefecture in 1883 that carriage traffic appeared. The stream is Yukawa.                 This is the view from Shin-machi of the post town of Hakone when facing Hakone checkpoint. The mountain behind is Komagadake. The street where the palanquin men are is Tokaido Highway (present-day National Route 1). The house on the right is facing toward southwest and a child and an old man are enjoying the sun. Judging from their clothes, it appears to be either late autumn or early spring.                   This is Kagami-ike (Mirror Pond) located at the southeast of Chumon Gate of Todaiji Temple. Since Mt. Wakakusa is visible afar, this is the view from the Nanboku (lit. South-North) approach to the temple when facing southeast. The stairs at west of Nakashima Island and a torii gate are present.                       This photo is a panoramic view from Kotohira Shrine at Minamiyamate of the southern tip of the foreign settlement and the Naminohira area. The big building in the right foreground is Chintei Elementary school (later Naminohira Elementary School), a newly built and renamed school at the foot of Mr. Nabekanmuri. (Formerly known as Kozone Elementary School at a different location. Someone, possibly a teacher, is standing by the entrance. There are several boys and girls on the school ground.
