A home in the cave,Dogashima Island

This is the cave just before Shiraito Falls after going up the mountain road behind Yakushi-do after crossing Hayakawa River from Dogashima. It is reported that the famous Buddhist monk Musokokushi (1275-1351, a Zen priest and probably the most important figure in Japanese medieval garden design) practiced religious austerities during Muromachi Period. An old man and young sisters are standing at the entrance of the cave and someone appears inside. Sandals are being dried on the rock and the bloom and pail are placed at the entrance.     Judging from the condition of the trees, this appears to be the Tamadare Waterfall before it was incorporated as Takinomae Park in 1891. The young woman is possibly an employee of a nearby inn. The volume of water is abundant and this photo shows the force of the falls before the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, when half of the fall was destroyed.         This is the northeastern view from the present-day parking lot of Miyagino Hojuin Temple. The water mill was taken place by a residential house, but the Setosawa Creek and the waterway on the left side of the water mill still exist today.             This is 3.2m magaibotoke (the largest in Kanto region during the Kamakura Period) carved into over seven meter high pyrozene andesite rock for jizo worship during Middle Ages. Although there is only one jizo here, this is called Rokudo (Six Way) Jizo because this is one of the group of stone buddhas around Shojingaike Pond which was regarded as the crossroad of Rokudo (lit. Six Road: Buddhist terminology meaning transmigration in the six paths of life).
