Gongen Shrine,Hakone

This is the main hall of Hakone Shrine. Timbering is surruounding the shrine. Since there is no record of restoration during the Meiji Period, repainting was being done at this time. In 1884, the Department of Internal Affairs had given 300 yen for the purpose of preserving the old temples and shrines and the timing could be the same.       The front gate of Zojoji Temple at Shiba is visible on the far left. The Tokyo City Railway Mita-Hibiya Line opened here in June 1904, but no train tracks are visible in this photograph. The photographer, Herbert George Ponting, visited Japan once in 1896 and again in 1903. The caption on the lower right saying Copyright 1904 indicates that he took this photograph during the second visit.         These wisteria terraces were all destroyed during World War II air raids. The wisteria trees of today were planted one by one from around 1950 by the local people. The wisteria blossoms at Kameido Tenjin Shrine are said to be the best in Tokyo, and they were chosen as one of the New Best One Hundred Scenes of Tokyo.           The cedars along Nikko Highway were donated by Matsudaira Masatsuna on the 33rd anniversary of the death of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. The building visible in the background probably stands near Oiwake Jizo. This area was beautiful at the time. The sky is visible between the trees.             An elderly woman prays for good luck by touching the bronze cow on a stone pedestal at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. The statue was donated by shrine followers. The woman is wearing a hand towel on her head, holding a cane in her right hand, and touching the hind leg of the cow with her left hand. Early blooming plum trees are visible in the background. The shrine's guardian deity, the cow was regarded as a messenger of Sugawara-no-Michizane. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G.               Judging from the condition of the trees, this appears to be the Tamadare Waterfall before it was incorporated as Takinomae Park in 1891. The young woman is possibly an employee of a nearby inn. The volume of water is abundant and this photo shows the force of the falls before the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, when half of the fall was destroyed. Currently the falls, which are in the garden of Tenseien Hotel, are open to the public.                 The area across Sumida River from Asakusa is Mukojima. There is no official boundary, but area from Mokuboji Temple to Makura Bridge is referred to as Mukojima. The banks of Sumida River at Mukojima are called Sumida-tei or Boku-tei. Cherry trees were planted here during the Kyoho Period (1716-36) by the 8th Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune, and saplings were planted from time to time thereafter. This area thus became the most popular place to enjoy cherry blossoms in Edo.                   It happens once in a while there is a lot of snow from February to March at Hakone. Depending on the altitude the amount of snowfall is evidently different. There is a snowbelt around the altitude of 300m and 500m and below that line, the snow hardly accumulates. Therefore, this must be higher than Ohiradai and definately not Yumoto or Tonosawa.                     Balcony of the main hall of Kiyomizu Temple seen from Okuno-in, facing west-northwest. Among the sightseers there are women with parasols. It is probably the beginning of summer because the trees are lush with leaves. The terrace was renovated in 1633. The building is in the yosemune style, and the roof is made entirely of hinoki tree bark. Wings flank the west side and the east and west of the south side.
