Shiraito Falls in Kamiide, Fujinomiya City. The melt water from Mt. Fuji is blocked at the precipice, wells up from the lava bed, and spills over as hundreds of thin waterfalls into the basin. Metaki Falls is not visible. The water becomes Shiba River and flows into Fuji River.     The five-story pagoda of Hokanji Temple is viewed facing east. There are many visitors on the temple approach, and a gas light is visible.       This photo captures Matsushima Beach as seen from Kyogashima Island. The Kanrantei Teahouse in the Momohama Period (late 16th century) architecture style, a Designated Cultural Asset of Miyagi Prefecture, is visible in the distance, just to the left side of the island.         Judging from the condition of the trees, this appears to be the Tamadare Waterfall before it was incorporated as Takinomae Park in 1891. The young woman is possibly an employee of a nearby inn. The volume of water is abundant and this photo shows the force of the falls before the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, when half of the fall was destroyed. Currently the falls, which are in the garden of Tenseien Hotel, are open to the public.           A man is fishing at Hozu Gorge, wearing a hand towel on his head and holding a long fishing rod over the rapids. People took the approximately 16km boat ride from Hozu Town in Kameoka to Togetsu Bridge in Arashiyama.             The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G.                 This is Shichishoen at Mukojima, the villa of the Hotta family, former feudal lords of the Sakura Clan. The villa was owned by the family from 1868 to 1887. Of kaiyushiki (garden with a pond and promenade style), the garden was watered by the Sumida River and changed according to the tides. It was referred to as one of the best gardens in Tokyo.
