This location is the present day Tsunazaka slope at Mita 2-chome. The house on the right was the residence of the Matsudairas of the Hizen(present day Nagasaki Prefecture) Shimabara-han fief, the house on the right going up the slope was the residence of the Matsudairas of the Iyo(present day Ehime Prefecture) Matsuyama-han fief, and the one on the left was the second residence of the Matsudairas of Mutsu(present day Aomori and part of Iwate Prefectures). Right now there stands Keio University at the bottom of the slope and the Italian Embassy on top of the slope. The site of the residences of Satohara-han and Matsuyama-han belongs to the Mitsui Club in Tsuna-machi. When Okuma Shigenobu died in 1922, his house and garden were donated to Waseda University in accordance with his will. The garden is about 33,960 square metres in area. Okuma Hall is now located on the site of the house. The Rihga Royal Hotel Waseda was opened in the northern part of the garden in 1994.         The residence of Okuma Shigenobu in Totsuka Village (present day Totsuka-machi, Shinjuku Ward). The noted statesman lived in a Western-style mansion in Iida-machi (present day Kudan 1-chome) but later moved into the residence of the former lord of the Takamatsu Clan, Matsudaira Yorisato, located next to Tokyo Polytechnic School. After acquiring the house, he made some extensions and modifications and filled in the garden pond shown in photograph #4005. The road is Tokaido Highway (present-day National Route 1) and a cart, rickshaw, and pails are visible. Three children, possibly brothers and sister, are standing. The telegraph pole is on the right.                   The shimenawa is a rope to indicate the holiness of a place, and rope made of hay is twisted leftwards. This is placed in small Shinto altars within the house and also around the house on New Year's to indicate the presence of toshigami (deity welcomed to the household on New Year's for happiness throughout the year).                     This photo has August 20, 1874 written on it. The foundry with two chimneys and the brick building with the boiler room which had started operation directly under the shogunate government in 1857 survived the typhoon. Another brick building, the lathe workshop with the first iron roof truss in Japan was not destroyed. The western-style building on the hill to the left is the dormitory for foreign staff built in April,1874.                       Kanda Myojin Shrine prospered under the protection of the Tokugawa Shogunate as a guardian deity of Edo. Taira Masakado is enshrined here as the Oanamuchi-no-mikoto deity. The shrine moved to its current location (present-day Sotokanda 2-chome) from Surugadai in 1616. It was renamed Kanda Shinto Shrine in 1872. The Kanda Festival, one of the three major festivals in Tokyo, is held here every other year, formerly on September 15, now in May.
