The Great Torii,Suwa Shrine

This is the big torii gate at the entrance to Suwa Shrine at Kami-Nishiyama-machi in Nagasaki City. Originally bronze, it was built in 1831. The plaque on the gate reads ‘Chinzei Taisha.’ The gate was destroyed by a typhoon on August 20, 1874 and rebuilt in 1892 cast by the Mitsubishi Shipyard. The torii gate in the back is stone. The buildings around the gates are representative of the era.         This photo captures the back of trading company buildings and consulates along Oura coast street in the mid Meiji period. The street on the right is paved with stones and a rickshaw, a typical mode of transportation, is parked. A number of commercial ships and war vessels are anchored in the port illustrating Nagasaki Port’s golden trade period.           View of the Romon Gate from Taiko-bashi (Drum Bridge) located just through the torii gate at the entrance of the shrine. The five girls in hakama trousers are perhaps praying to pass a school examination. Three bridges span Shinji Pond: Taiko-bashi, Hira-bashi, and Taiko-bashi. They are said to represent the past, present, and future.             The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G.                 The six meter-tall Karagane Torii is in the right foreground. The first bronze torii gate in Japan, it was built by third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. The Todaihoya, where hanging lanterns are stored, is visible through the gate. At the top of the stairs stands Yomei Gate, the most famous structure at Nikko Toshogu.                       This is Kagami-ike (Mirror Pond) located at the southeast of Chumon Gate of Todaiji Temple. Since Mt. Wakakusa is visible afar, this is the view from the Nanboku (lit. South-North) approach to the temple when facing southeast. The stairs at west of Nakashima Island and a torii gate are present.
