                NARA, Japan - Researchers at Nara Women's University believe that the wild nettles in Nara Park (bottom photo) have grown poison-tipped thorns probably as a defense mechanism against nettle-eating deer (top photo) in the park. According to a study conducted by a research group headed by Hiroaki Sato, a Nara Women's University associate professor who specializes in insect biology, nettles in Nara Park have 50 times more thorns that nettles found in southern Nara Prefecture and elsewhere. The researchers believe that, as a survival mechanism, Nara Park nettles developed more poison-tipped thorns after deer were brought from Ibaraki Prefecture to Nara Park about 1,200 years ago.                   TOKYO, Japan - Water bears, a slow-moving animal measuring less than 1 millimeter in length (photo), can survive extremely high atmospheric pressure equivalent to 75,000 atmospheres, according to experiments conducted by researchers at Okayama University. The eight-legged water bears are known to survive in extreme environmental conditions, such as minus 250 C temperatures, extreme dryness and heavy radiation. Fumihisa Ono, an Okayama University physics professor involved in the project, says researchers applied 75,000 atmospheres of pressure to 20 dried up water bears and found that they all came back to life six hours later when they were given water moisture.                     MATSUE, JAPAN - Shimane University professor Yuji Uchio and Nano Corp., a Tokyo precision instrument maker, have jointly developed a technology to treat a broken bone with a ''screw'' (in photo) made from the patient's bone, the professor and company officials said Jan. 6. The technology takes a bone piece as small as a peanut from a patient and processes it into a screw 1 to 5 millimeters in diameter. (Kyodo)
