First settlement reached in hepatitis damages suits against stat

FUKUOKA, Japan - A total of 29 hepatitis C sufferers suing the state and drugmakers for damages settled suits with the state in Osaka and Fukuoka on Feb. 4, the first such settlement among a series of similar lawsuits filed by about 240 people nationwide since 2002. High court certifies 9 as A-bomb illness sufferers

OSAKA, Japan - Plaintiffs rejoice at a press conference after the Osaka High Court on May 30 certified nine people as sufferers of illnesses from radiation as a result of the 1945 U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The court declared illegal the government's decisions not to grant certification to them. The top court upheld the same day a suspended prison sentence for Akihito Matsumura, a former senior health ministry official who was convicted for failing to prevent the use of HIV-contaminated blood products in the 1980s that resulted in the death of the patient.
