System glitch forces ANA to cancel flights from Haneda

TOKYO, Japan - The All Nippon Airways counter at Haneda airport is jammed with passengers stranded by computer malfunction at airline on May 27. The system, which controls ticket reservation as well as boarding and luggage flows, became unstable early in the day. The airline initially announced all domestic flights from Haneda would be canceled until 4 p.m. and later extended the cancellation until 6 p.m. (Kyodo)

Similar counters, opened for passengers using shuttle flights between Tokyo and Osaka, were also set up at Tokyo's Haneda airport for flight reservations, ticket sales and other services. The plane ran a test flight from late Sept. 13 to early Sept. 14 to check that the computer system had been successfully reprogrammed to prevent Y2K-related computer glitches. The date was temporarily switched to ''Dec. 31, 1999.'' When it changed to ''Jan. 1, 2000,'' the airline checked to see that the cockpit control panel functioned properly.                 YOKOHAMA, Japan - The body of an All Nippon Airways (ANA) pilot who was killed by a hijacker July 23 returns to his home in Umegaoka, Yokohama, just south of Tokyo, on July 24 after undergoing an autopsy. The 51-year-old pilot, Naoyuki Nagashima, was stabbed to death by a 28-year-old man who hijacked the ANA jumbo jet bound for Sapporo from Tokyo's Haneda airport.
