High court upholds decision on uranium enrichment plant

SENDAI, Japan - Plaintiffs head for the Sendai High Court in Sendai's Aoba Ward on May 9 to hear the court's ruling in their lawsuit demanding a revocation of the government's approval for the operations of Japan's sole commercial uranium enrichment plant in Rokkasho, Aomori Prefecture. Gov't appeals court decision over Isahaya

TOKYO, Japan - People stage a sit-in in front of the farm ministry in Tokyo on July 10 after the Japanese government appealed a district court ruling that ordered the state to open the Isahaya Bay dike in Nagasaki Prefecture, citing concerns that opening it will expose the area to risks of high tides which would damage farming business on the reclaimed land there. Asbestos victims file suit against state, manufacturers

TOKYO, Japan - Plaintiffs, including construction workers with asbestos-linked diseases and family members of deceased workers, head to the Tokyo District Court on May 16. About 170 people filed a lawsuit against the state and construction material manufacturers the same day, demanding 6.6 billion yen in damages. NAGOYA, Japan - The Nagoya High Court on May 31 upheld a lower court decision that dismissed claims by seven South Korean plaintiffs who sought compensation over forced labor at a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. munitions factory in Nagoya during World War II. Yang Gum Dok (C), 76, one of the plaintiffs, collapsed into tears after the judge handed down the sentence. (Kyodo)

State loses damages suit over lung disease for 4th time

TOKUSHIMA, Japan - Plaintiffs head to the Tokushima District Court in Tokushima Prefecture on March 28. The court ordered the state to pay a total of 57.2 million yen in damages to 26 people who contracted pneumoconiosis during state-ordered tunnel construction projects. High court overturns ruling on park as homeless man's address

OSAKA, Japan - Yuji Yamauchi, a homeless man who has lived in a pegged tent in Ogimachi Park in Osaka and received his mail there, faced an Osaka High Court ruling on Jan. 23 which overturned a lower court ruling that a park can be registered as an address of a homeless man. The ward office refused to register the park as his address in March 2004, prompting him to file the lawsuit with the Osaka District Court to demand the local government rescind the decision. High court also voids deportation order of Myanmar man

NAGOYA, Japan - Khin Maung Hla, a 40-year-old Myanmar man who is seeking asylum in Japan on the grounds that he faces persecution in his home country due to his involvement in pro-democracy activities, arrives at the Nagoya High Court on Jan. 18 to hear the court's ruling on his appeal. The high court upheld a lower court decision which voided a government order to deport him. (Kyodo)
