Sony unveils digital music player capable of displaying lyrics

TOKYO, Japan - Sony Corp. President Howard Stringer shows off in Tokyo on Sept. 16, 2009, one of 12 new models of the company's Walkman portable digital music player capable of displaying the lyrics of songs downloaded from online music libraries. He said at a news conference that the new Walkman players will help the company beat rivals in Sony's ''home ground'' of Japan and pave the way for Sony to secure a greater share of the global market, currently dominated by iPod music players produced by Apple Inc. of the United States. Sony said purchasers of the new Walkman players, which will hit store shelves in Japan on or after Oct. 10, will be able to download songs from both the Mora and iTunes online digital music sites and lyrics from the ''kashipita'' site of SyncPower Corp., a new Sony ally. KDDI to sell Sony's Walkman brand mobile phone next month

TOKYO, Japan - KDDI Corp. will launch Sony Corp.'s Walkman brand mobile phone (photo) that can be used as a music player in Japan by the end of June, the company said on May 22. The new phone can play music for 30 hours on a single charge as it utilizes Sony's portable music player technology. Sony unveils new Walkman that 'evolves' to suit users' taste

TOKYO, Japan - Sony Corp. said Sept. 8 it will release five new palm-size digital Walkman models that ''evolves'' in accordance with listeners' preference of music. The new Walkman A series, to be put on the Japanese market Nov. 19, is equipped with functions to learn users' taste in music. Microsoft to sell new video game console next fall

TOKYO, March 10 Kyodo - Rick Thompson, vice president in charge of hardware at Microsoft Corp., speaking in a press conference at a Tokyo hotel on March 10, announces the U.S. software giant's plan to enter the lucrative home video game market in the fall of next year by launching its own game console tentatively called the ''X-Box.'' The console, which will feature a DVD drive and allow Internet access, will compete directly with Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.'s PlayStation 2 -- the game platform recently launched in Japan.
