So far the U.S. has the world's highest tally of monkeypox cases. Health experts said given the testing bottlenecks in the U.S., monkeypox cases are likely being undercounted. San Francisco became the first major U.S. city last Thursday to declare a local health emergency on monkeypox in an effort to strengthen the city's preparedness and response amid the high demand for the vaccine. The declaration goes into effect on Monday. On Saturday, New York City declared a public health emergency due to the monkeypox outbreak.
