Throat singing, also known as Khoomei, is a traditional art form of the Mongolian ethnic group. It was inscribed in UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage in 2019.
Batbayer Arzan, a Khoomei performer in China's Xinjiang has devoted himself to the Mongolian art of singing with support from the government.

"My name is Batbayer Arzan. I'm from Handgait Mongolian township in Altay city.
I'm a folk artist and a fourth-generation inheritor of Khoomei (throat singing) in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
Khoomei is a style of singing in which a performer imitates the sounds of nature.
The government funds me 4,800 yuan (about 679 U.S. dollars) per year to promote the art.
I can get an extra 1,500 yuan (about 212 U.S. dollars) of subsidy per month by teaching
