TOKYO, Japan - Picture shows Hiromitsu Ishi, president of Hitotsubashi University, who was formally named chairman of the government's Tax Commission on Sept. 14. Ishi succeeds Kan Kato, president of Chiba University of Commerce, who was the panel's chief for about 10 years.

        TOKYO, Japan - Ryuzo Sejima (file photo taken in 1997), an Imperial Headquarters staffer-turned-Itochu Corp. chairman, died of old age on Sept. 4 at his Tokyo home. He was 95. While Itochu chairman, Sejima played a major role in privatizing Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corp. and the Japan National Railways as a member of the government's commission on administrative reform. He was also known for his close ties with former Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone.

                TOKYO, Japan - Former House of Representatives lawmaker Yojiro Nakajima (file photo), who was convicted of vote-buying and fraud, was found hanged at his home in Tokyo's Meguro Ward on Jan. 6. Nakajima, 41, was given a two-year prison term last September for defrauding the state of about 10 million yen, money that was given to him from tax funds to pay for a secretary. He had appealed the Tokyo High Court decision to the Supreme Court.
