(1)Supreme Court holds state responsible for Minamata disease
TOKYO, Japan - Toshiyuki Kawakami, head of a group of 45 plaintiffs who sued the central and Kumamoto prefectural governments to seek compensation for the Minamata mercury-poisoning disease, holds a banner proclaiming their victory in front of the Supreme Court in Tokyo on Oct. 25. The court held the state and prefectural governments responsible for the disease in the 1950s and 1960s.
