Violinist Eto dies at 80

TOKYO, Japan - Famed violinist Toshiya Eto (file photo taken in March, 1979) died at the age of 80, his family said on Jan. 22. The date and cause of his death have not been made available as of yet. Eto, a member of the Japan Art Academy, served as chief of Toho Gakuen School of Music.

TOKYO, Japan - Junzo Shono (in this undated file photo), an eminent author and a member of the Japan Art Academy, died of age on Sept. 21, 2009, at his home in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, people close to him said on Sept. 22. He was 88. A native of Osaka, Shono began writing novels after World War II and won the Akutagawa Award in 1955 for his book titled ''Purusaido shokei (Poolside Scene).'' (Kyodo)

TOKYO, Japan -Jiro Yanase (file photo), honorary chairman of Yanase & Co., who pioneered the auto import business in Japan, died March 13 at a Tokyo hospital of pneumonia at age 91, his family said. Yanase, who was ran the imported car dealership for over half a century, was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in the United States in 2004.

TOKYO, Japan - Tamako Kataoka (in file photo taken Sept. 2001), a Japanese-style painter awarded with the Order of Culture, died Jan. 16 of acute heart failure at a hospital in Kanagawa Prefecture, her family said Jan. 21. She was 103.

Professor of Chinese philosophy Seiichi Uno dies at 97

TOKYO, Japan - Seiichi Uno (file photo), a professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo and a leading scholar in Chinese philosophy, died Jan. 7 of old age at his home in Tokyo, his family said Jan. 8. He was 97. Uno, a Tokyo native, was a member of the National Language Council and one of the scholars delegated by the government to name the current imperial era (Heisei) following the end of the Showa era after the death in January 1989 of Emperor Hirohito, who is posthumously known as Emperor Showa.

Ex-JFBA chief Kitayama dies at 85

KOBE, Japan - Rokuro Kitayama (file photo), former chairman of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, died of heart failure on Jan. 4 at a hospital in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, his family said Jan. 7. He was 85. Kitayama served as JFBA head from April 1986 to March 1988.

Saruhashi, promoter of female scientists, dies at 87

TOKYO, Japan - Katsuko Saruhashi (file photo taken in May 2002), the first female member of the Science Council of Japan, who helped champion young female scientists, died Sept. 29 of pneumonia at her home in Tokyo, her family said Oct. 2. She was 87. Saruhashi is known as the founder of the ''Saruhashi Award'' to honor female scientists up to the age of 49 for outstanding research.

Yokota to retire as head of abductee families' group

TOKYO, Japan - Shigeru Yokota (file photo), who heads a group of Japanese families of victims of North Korea's abductions, plans to step down from the post due to waning physical strength. Yokota, 74, became the head of the Association of the Families of Victims Kidnapped by North Korea when it was formed on March 25, 1997, and has led the campaign, together with his wife Sakie, 71, to seek the return of abductees, including their daughter Megumi, who was abducted by North Korean agents in 1977 at the age of 13.

Hanayagi Juraku, Living Nat'l Treasure of Japan dance, dies

TOKYO, Japan - Hanayagi Juraku (file photo taken May 2004), a Living National Treasure of classical Japanese dance, died of emphysema on Jan. 7 at a Tokyo hospital, his family said Jan. 8. He was 88. Born in Tokyo, he inherited the tradition of classical Japanese dance as a performer of the Hanayagi school. His real name was Jiro Aoyama.

Japanese skiing pioneer Miura dies at 101

TOKYO, Japan - Well-known Japanese skiing pioneer Keizo Miura (file photo) died of multiple organ failure on Jan. 5 at a Tokyo hospital, his family said. He was 101. Miura skied down the Mont Blanc glacier in France in February 2003 at age 99 together with his eldest son Yuichiro, also known as an adventure skier, and his grandson Yuta.
