TOKYO, Japan - Sony Corp. said Nov. 1 it will release seven types of Vaio notebook personal computers from Dec. 2, claiming that the new products are suitable for business use as they are light and strong. The Vaio Type G (in photo) weighs 900 grams and boasts high tolerance to shaking and impacts as it is made of high-intensity carbon materials, Sony said. The battery can run for between 12 and 13 hours, it said.

Toshiba develops new fuel cell for PCs

TOKYO, Japan - Toshiba Corp. said March 5 it has developed a prototype fuel cell (in handout photo) for a portable personal computer that may end reliance on rechargeable batteries. The small form factor direct methanol fuel cell, which the company claims is the first of its kind in the world, has a maximum output of 20 watts and can run about five hours on a single fuel cartridge. TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows what NEC Corp. says is Japan's first desktop personal computer capable of receiving digital satellite television broadcasts. NEC said Feb. 27 it will start shipping the VALUESTAR T on March 8. The model has a 15.3-inch wide digital liquid crystal display (LCD) that can automatically show selected TV programs. The model is equipped with Intel's Pentium III CPU and a 60-gigabyte hard disk drive.
