Women shoot arrows in Coming-of-Age Day ritual

Women who will be turning 20 this year shoot arrows at a target in Sanjusangendo (the main hall of Rengeoin, a small Buddhist temple in Kyoto), on Coming-of-Age Day Jan. 15. This type of archery contest dates back to the times of Iemitsu Tokugawa (1604-1651), the third shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, who forced his subordinate samurai warriors to compete in such contests.

The prayer hall at Rengeo-in Main Temple (Sanjusangendo). The seated figure in the centre is surrounded by statues of the 28 Followers of Kannon and flanked on both sides by the guardian statues of Fujin (Wind Deity) and Raijin (Thunder Deity). Made entirely of wood, the seated Senju Kannon is 3.35 meters tall and carved in the yosegi style, or joined-block construction method, with a hippaku or gold leaf finish. The eyes are made of crystal. The main temple and the tower burned down 8 times. The present temple was restored in 1707(the 4th year of Hoei). The third largest wooden temple in Japan after the Great Buddha temple in Todaiji and Sanjusangendo in Nara, it is 23.7m wide, 52.8m deep, and 28m tall. The Sanjusangendo in Higashiyama-ku of Kyoto City. The temple enshrines the thousand Kannons offered by Taira Kiyomori at the request of the ex-Emperor Goshirakawa. The thousand Buddhas (wooden statues of thousand-handed Kannon, actually 1001 statues in all) are based on the anclent theory that if a ruler creates many Buddhas, the whole nation will be promised happiness. There are 500 statues in ten rows on both sides of the principal image of the seated thousand-handed Kannon, and one in the back.
