Uncertain outlook for Skymark Airlines

OSAKA, Japan - A passenger goes through boarding procedures at Osaka airport on Sept. 18 for a Skymark Airlines flight. One year has passed since Skymark inaugurated bargain-fare domestic air services in September 1998, doing good business at first. Now its prospects are uncertain because the other three airlines -- All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines and Japan Air System -- decided earlier this year to match Skymark's low fares.

    OSAKA, Japan - A ceremony marking the opening of a common counter for Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways and Japan Air System is held Sept. 20 at Kansai airport in Osaka. Similar counters, opened for passengers using shuttle flights between Tokyo and Osaka, were also set up at Tokyo's Haneda airport for flight reservations, ticket sales and other services. The shuttle flights were launched July 1 in an attempt to draw travelers away from Shinkansen bullet train service.

      TOKYO, Japan - The photo shows a clock on the control panel of an airplane of All Nippon Airways (ANA). The plane ran a test flight from late Sept. 13 to early Sept. 14 to check that the computer system had been successfully reprogrammed to prevent Y2K-related computer glitches. The date was temporarily switched to ''Dec. 31, 1999.'' When it changed to ''Jan. 1, 2000,'' the airline checked to see that the cockpit control panel functioned properly.           Passengers board the inaugural flight of Hokkaido International Airlines, known as Air Do, at Haneda airport in Tokyo on the morning of Dec. 20. The airline was licensed in October to operate air services between Tokyo and Sapporo, with fares set initially at 16,000 yen one way, 36 percent lower than regular ticket prices offered by existing airlines.               NARITA, Japan, Dec. 29 Kyodo A United Airlines jumbo jet with 393 people aboard hit a massive air turbulence over the Pacific late Sunday, leaving one person dead and more than 60 people injured, some of them seriously. The accident took place over the northern Pacific about two hours after the U.S. airliner took off from the New Tokyo International Airport at Narita at 9:05 p.m. The Boeing 747, flight 826 bound for Honolulu with 374 passengers and 19 crew members aboard, flew back safely to Narita. The United pilot radioed air traffic controllers at Narita after accident, and ambulances and fire engines were on standby as the aircraft touched down at the airport at 2:25 a.m. Monday One Japanese female passenger, Konomi Kataura, 32, was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital. The injured passengers and crew members were rushed to local hospitals in Narita and nearby cities.
